Subject choice and Career assessment

Subject choice and Career assessment

The process of choosing subjects in Grade 9 and then a career path in Grade 11 and 12 is often fraught with anxiety and insecurity. The pressure to make the right choice is often overwhelming for some adolescents (and sometimes parents). For others the choice seems straight forward but they would like confirmation that they are choosing the correct path.

Our approach to subject and career path choice is that people are often suited to a few career paths and these all need to be explored by the person before a final decision can be made. This means that subject choice needs to be broad enough to allow for a variety of career paths and to allow for your adolescent's growth and individuation. With regard to career we provide guidelines, areas to explore, and course options to investigate. Career path is a very personal choice and job shadowing is strongly recommended from Grade 8 onwards. Both our subject and career choice assessments are holistic and explore the cognitive skills, personality and interests of your adolescent.

As with the psycho-educational assessments, time is taken to alleviate anxiety and ensure that the process is rewarding and uplifting. A pre-assessment with the adolescent and parents (or guardians) takes place before the assessment day. Similarly parents and adolescent attend the feedback session which will outline possible subjects or careers for discussion. A full written report is provided. Group assessments are also offered with a shorter report, pre-assessment and feedback.
